Last week we went to Wilmington, DE for the opening of
municipalWORKSHOP’s recent project: Market Box. They created an amazing sculpture/bus shelter for the city of Wilmington. The structure is created entirely out of wood using old-school joinery techniques.

Richard Saxton and the mW team (David Wyrick and Kris Rusch) spent the summer in Delaware working with the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts and apprentices in the Challenge Program.
Everyone was happy with the project, and we had beer and good food to go with the art which is a great mW tradition.
The show at the DCCA includes examples of the joinery techniques used in the construction along with wall panels designed by yours truly featuring photo documentation of the project and collages and drawings explaining the design process.

this is the Hand Drawn Map Association
The HDMA is an archive devoted to collecting, exhibiting and sharing maps and other interesting diagrams that have been drawn or otherwise created by hand. We are both a web archive collecting and distributing information on the internet as well as a physical archive carefully preserving maps for storage and exhibition.
Please visit the HDMA at www.handmaps.org
In addition to your future visit, your help would be greatly appreciated. You can help by:
Donating maps to our archive that you create or find. We are interested in all maps and diagrams that are designed by hand. This could include maps that are created as part of an artistic process, maps that are created specifically for our archive, maps that are drawn to explain how to get somewhere, or even maps that you find on the ground. Additional information about submitting maps can be found on our website.
Spread the word about our endeavors by telling friends, encouraging other map enthusiasts to send us stuff, and posting information to your blog, facebook, or myspace account.
Now you can join us at our facebook page.

This week we went to one of our favorite restaurants in town, Wish You Were Here. Also, they just happen to be participating in our PLACEmats project. Check out some of the photos we took.PLACEmats photos at Flickr
FREE DESIGN has been busy putting together our recent project, PLACEmats. The project features a series of 20 printed paper placemats designed by artists specifically for restaurants in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The project was organized by FREE DESIGN director and founder, Kristofer Harzinski, curated by Harriet Hacker, Director of Where, and funded by a grant from the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (PPA), the regional arts funding partnership of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. That’s all I’ll say here. For more information, please visit Where.
FREE DESIGN says: “When we’re not designing for you, we’re welcoming interns.”
FREE DESIGN was asked to create a small publication for the Baltimore Book Festival. Our contribution, How to Get There: the first annual atlas of the HDMA is a collection of hand drawn maps we found over the years and a few we commissioned specifically for our publication. The magazine stand at the book festival presented a series of books created using cheap materials like inkjet prints and photocopies. Obviously, we couldn’t really refuse this request, it’s right up our alley. We like this idea so much, we created a Flickr pool. So, if you find a hand drawn map someday, please share it with us.

I love getting things in the mail, even when I pay for them. We received a nice box of stickers this week.

- “Excuse me…can I ask you what you’re doing?”
- “Sure…um….I’m just inventorying the cars in the parking garage today.”
- “Oh…OK…yah…I thought you were giving out tickets.”
- “No…I’m sorry.”
- “Oh…OK.”
